Soaking Wet!

Posted in Celebration, Miscellaneous, Nature on July 20, 2009 by Ramesh Ramakrishnan

Yesss….!!! It finally poured here yesterday! Hyderabad received about 16.1 mm of rainfall last evening – a much awaited phenomenon. I can tell you, the last few weeks have been not so great – with the rains pretty much playing hide and seek.

Thankfully, this will now act as a harbringer to more rain, and we will finally see the dust being washed off the streets, and some greenery around!

Updates – albeit late!!!

Okay!! For those of you who didn’t know, we recently (a couple of weeks) moved back to Hyderabad, from the US. It was a good stint in US, and we opted to move back, closer to family.

It’s been nice here, and though the traffic patterns etc. have deterioated, it is still good to be back!!!

Expect my future posts to have more India specific content now…..

All one needs to do, is land up on the website (www.freerice.com), and then play a game, where a word is shown with 4 possible meanings. One needs to choose the correct meaning, and that’s how one progresses. For every correct answer, 20 grains of rice are donated by the sponsors at the bottom of that page.

I did a quick background check on Snopes, to see if this true or a scam, and it is true.

I would encourage you to all give this a whirl – I’ve already done about 6000 grains and will continue to go on. The advantage to you, is that you get to enhance your vocabulary which carrying out a charitable cause.

Sunol Regional Wilderness PathwaySince today is a saturday and pretty much the weekend, I have a treat for all of you. Today, insted of one photograph, we have two. This stems from the fact that Sridhar has requested me to put up some of my Black and White ones, while I already had a color snap in mind for this post.

For those who do not know, Sridhar is one of our best pals, and majorly into photography. One of his favorite photographers is Ansel Adams, whose gallery is located here.

Sunol Regional Wilderness TreeAnyhow, these two photographs were taken at the Sunol Regional Wilderness Park, near Sunol, California. The four of us (Mayur, Purvi, Mahi and I (Ramesh)) had gone there quite a while ago.

A must visit for anyone interested in nature based photography….

Hoover TowerThis picture was taken at the Stanford University in Palo Alto, quite close to home. We had gone there for their guided tour along with parents. This particular building is called the Hoover Tower and is one of the major landmarks there.

One gets a bird’s eye view of the entire campus from the top. Of course, the flip side is that it is extremely windy at the top.

Blue Flower BudsHere is a photo that I snapped up last evening. Of all the places, this was right next to the community dustbin, which brings to my mind, and age old Indian quote – “Kamal ka phool, keechad mein bhi hee ugtha hai”. Literally, it means that even if there the a dirty marsh or bog, the lotus flower will grow there. In other words, beauty can be found in even the ugliest locations!

I really liked the way the blue flowers stood out against the green foilage and created an identity of their own.

Spiral Straw HatFor today’s photograph of the day, I’d like to bring to the table this shot that I snapped up in San Diego. Took this photo while we were seated before the Spreckles Organ (the world’s largest pipe organ) in Balboa Park, in San Diego.

We were waiting for the show to start, and the gentleman in the seat in front of me, had this fabulously detailed straw hat on.

I really liked the symmetry in the weaving in the hat, especially the fact that it isn’t a horizontal / vertical weave, but instead is a spiral weave.

Mahi’s Birthday

Mahi\'s Birthday with SmiliesJust a super short post here. It was Mahi’s birthday on the 20th, and as is obvious from the picture, she was all smiles…….

Given the fact that the two of us have always liked smileys, I thought it was appropriate to gift them to the one person who always has a cheery disposition!!!

Happy birthday once again, Mahi!

Sacramento Train Station

For today’s photograph, I’d like to step back a little in time, and take you on a trip to Sacramento, the capital of the State of California.

Sacramento, has two main regions, downtown, and oldtown. Downtown is where all the high rise buildings are, while oldtown, as the name suggest, is an area which looks pretty much like the early 19th century. It has wooden boardwalks, steam powered train engines, horse driven carriages, saloon doors (like in the wild west), to name a few.

This particular picture, is that of the train station in oldtown Sacramento. The trains would leave from the other side, and just beyond it, is the river, where the ferry operates.

What I like about this picture, is the detail that the cobblestones bring to the image, while ensuring that no focus is lost from the efffect that the building produces, with the cloudy sky in the background.
