Photo of the Day – 23rd June 2008
For today’s photograph, I’d like to step back a little in time, and take you on a trip to Sacramento, the capital of the State of California.
Sacramento, has two main regions, downtown, and oldtown. Downtown is where all the high rise buildings are, while oldtown, as the name suggest, is an area which looks pretty much like the early 19th century. It has wooden boardwalks, steam powered train engines, horse driven carriages, saloon doors (like in the wild west), to name a few.
This particular picture, is that of the train station in oldtown Sacramento. The trains would leave from the other side, and just beyond it, is the river, where the ferry operates.
What I like about this picture, is the detail that the cobblestones bring to the image, while ensuring that no focus is lost from the efffect that the building produces, with the cloudy sky in the background.

That’s neat. Would it have helped if you had reduced the noise or have used the de-speckle tool to smoothen the image?
I like the ‘old world’ feel about the scene; B&W images and railway stations! Now, that gives me an idea about things I could photograph back home in India….
Keep the show going… Happy Photographing.

Thanks Sridhar! I did try some noise reduction, but for some strange reason, it seems to blur our more. Will try some on it today, once again.
Oh yes, I can well imagine, a trip back to India, rail tracks going into the distance, detailing in the pebbles in the tracks…..mind blowing!!

I love this picture…you are right about the details. There is a lot happening in the picture, yet the building remains the focal point. And even today, it looks like a “old time” photograph. Great work!
